Travelling Home Schooling Options.

What are some homeschooling options for sailing families?

Where can you find homeschooling resources, curricula, and strategies to educate your children while living a nomadic lifestyle on a sailboat?

Homeschooling on a sailboat opens up a world of experiential learning opportunities, aligning education with the adventure of a seafaring lifestyle. It’s also arguably, the hardest skill to master when sailing as a family. Opting for flexible and mobile homeschooling resources is key.

Online platforms like Khan Academy, Time4Learning, and Outschool provide a range of subjects and grade levels, accommodating the dynamic nature of life at sea. There are also a myriad of AI tutors are being developed as we speak which should also be available online very soon. Watch this space!

Consider literature-based curricula that integrate reading with real-world experiences, fostering a love for learning.

Nautical-themed lessons can turn everyday sailing tasks into educational adventures, incorporating navigation, marine biology, and geography into daily life.

We followed the voyages of Darwin and Captain Cook when exploring the south Pacific which provided a fantastic framework for lessons and discussions.

Utilise e-books and audiobooks to conserve space while building a floating library. Engage in hands-on activities such as fishing, navigation exercises, and exploring new cultures to enhance practical skills and cultural understanding.

Connecting with other sailing families through homeschooling networks and Facebook groups  provides a supportive community and shared resources. By embracing a personalised, adaptable approach to education, sailing families can nurture a love for learning that mirrors the freedom and curiosity inherent in a life at sea.

Further Reading: "Voyaging with Kids: A Guide to Family Life Afloat" by Behan Gifford, Sara Dawn Johnson, and Michael Robertson.

A great book with advice on homeschooling for sailing families. This insightful guide not only delves into the practicalities of sailing with children but also provides valuable information on homeschooling strategies tailored for a nomadic lifestyle.

The authors share their experiences and offer practical advice on creating a learning environment aboard a sailboat.

However, like many books in our recommendations, it is pre-Covid and pre-AI and there have been many developments in remote homeschooling since then, so it is worth looking into the latest online resources, books and technological advance in this area.
